Speaking at the seminar, Mr. Nguyen Hong Tien, Director of Technical Infrastructure Department, said: drainage and wastewater treatment is an area that is particularly concerned by the society in the face of major challenges of climate change. Therefore, in 2016, the Prime Minister signed to issue the adjustment of the development orientation of urban drainage and sewerage in Vietnam to 2025 with a vision to 2050. This adjustment has many new points such as the development of the safe and sustainable drainage, river basin resource management, wastewater and rainwater re-treatment as well as sludge management, selection of construction technology, safe,environmentally friendly and energy-saving technology of renovation and repair of piping systems, etc.

According to the orientation approved by the Prime Minister by 2020, 15 – 20% of the total amount of wastewater in urban centers will be collected and treated up to technical standards and regulations before being discharged into the environment; local water drainage management regulations will be elaborated and promulgated; local
authorities will formulate mechanisms and policies to create favorable conditions for the community to participate in the construction, supervision and protection of the urban drainage system; develop a roadmap for implementation of drainage service prices in accordance with local socio-economic conditions, ensure payment for the maintenance of the operation of management and proceed to offset construction investment costs of a drainage system which is suitable for the development and completion stages of the drainage system.

According to the report, up to now, Vietnam has about 37 centralized wastewater treatment plants with a total design capacity of 890,000 m3 / day and night (day and night), by 2020 there will be about 50 more wastewater treatment plants with a total capacity of about 2 million m3 / day is put into operation, increasing the rate of wastewater collected and treated to about 20%.
Besides, in the country, there are 33 provinces and cities that have issued regulations on local drainage management. After Decree 80/2014 / ND-CP of the Government was issued, 14 provinces and cities have issued new regulations on local drainage management and 08 provinces have reviewed, revised and issued regulations on local drainage management according to Decree 80/2014 / ND-CP.
Ms. Tran Thi Thao Huong, Head of the Water Drainage and Wastewater Management Division of the Technical Infrastructure Agency, said: all over the country, the drainage planning is integrated into the construction master plan. Currently, about a quarter of the provinces have specialized drainage plans such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Vinh Phuc, Phu Yen, Soc Trang, Binh Dinh, Binh Duong and some provinces are on the way.
In recent years, there have been many researches, application of many scientific and technical advances in the field of water supply and drainage and environmental sanitation, bringing many effects to units in the field such as Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Binh Duong, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria – Vung Tau with technologies such as: A2O, SBR, improved SBR, ASBR, oxidized ditch, biological lakes, activated sludge, etc.
